Dr. Sofia Vallecorsa - Physicist, CERN openlab Theoretical and algorithmic advances, availability of data, and computing power are driving AI. Specifically in the Deep Learning (DL) domain, these advances have opened the door to exceptional perspectives of applications in the most diverse fields of science, business and society at large, and notably in High Energy Physics (HEP). However, we start realizing that, once more, one of the limitations of DL is sheer computing power, doubling every every quarter for the past few years. Dr. Sofia Vallecorsa is a CERN physicist with extensive experience on software development in the High Energy Physics domain, in particular on Machine Learning and Deep Learning applications within CERN which is a unique public-private partnership between CERN and leading ICT companies. Before joining openlab, Dr. Vallecorsa has been CERN Scientific Associate responsible for the development of Deep Learning based technologies for the simulation of particle transport through detectors and she has worked on optimisation of the GeantV detector simulation prototype on modern hardware architectures.
